Pelvic floor physical therapy is like any other physical therapy.
We will start your visit as follows:
Before any assessment occurs, we will review pelvic anatomy and discuss the role of the organs and muscles that may be contributing to your symptoms. This assessment is like the physical therapy assessment for any other part of the body, it’s just in a more intimate area. We make observations around tissue health, range of motion and muscle strength. If an internal pelvic exam is warranted, your therapist will proceed only after obtaining your consent.
Nothing will occur without your consent and the assessment will be fully discussed so you can determine what is best for your comfort. This is not a pelvic exam but specifically a pelvic floor muscle assessment. An internal exam allows your therapist to ensure that you are correctly recruiting and activating the proper muscles. Additionally, the exam alerts your therapists to whether there is an over activity or tension present in the muscles. If there are concerns or questions, you’re always welcome to reach out to either of our therapists who will be happy to answer your questions.
